My newsletter often focuses on the philosophy behind what I do, that is, making internal changes to help you understand how less cluttered living improves overall health and happiness. Sometimes, my clients just want suggestions to improve the physical spaces. Here are a few simple ones, all items you can find at The Container Store or online.
Rolling carts – Do you do a lot of reading, crafting, bill-paying or other things in your living room? Does that project space often end up cluttered? A rolling cart provides a simple solution. Stash those items on your rolling cart when you’re done working and then roll it out of the way, into a closet or nook if possible.
Lazy susans – That’s what we called the turntable in the middle of our kitchen table. It’s also great inside kitchen cabinets for store spices or condiment jars. The spinning turntable helps you to find what you’re looking for without moving items around or looking behind other items. They’re especially handy in those otherwise awkward corner cabinets.
Bamboo or wire shelves – Adding an extra shelf into cabinets (which, by my account never have enough shelves) buys you some extra space. Let’s say you have 6 plates. Putting a shelf over those plates gives you a place to store coffee cups or dessert plates or bowls on the ever-important easiest to reach shelf in the cabinet.
Velvet hangers – Really, I swear by them. They are much thinner than the average plastic or wood hanger, thereby taking up less room on the rod. Honestly helpful in the overstuffed closet. They are also easier on the shoulders of all your hanging clothes. Finally, the quiet aesthetic of matching hangers in a closet full of colorful clothes is hard to beat.
Those are just a few things you can employ to get yourself in the better organizing mindset. If you would like some additional inspiration, please check out my blog.
