You’ve heard of budgeting when it comes to expenses for your household. Did you ever consider a budget for your storage space? Or, to put it another way, a space budget?
For example, your closet can reasonably accommodate 25 hangers. That means you can hang 25 articles of clothing. If you want to buy another article of clothing, you need to remove and donate one item to stay on budget. Where most household budgets run into difficulty is when you reach the budget but buy or add more.
When it comes to money, we put things on credit cards and say, “we’ll cut back a little next month so we can pay the credit card bill”. For some people that doesn’t happen. And when it’s clothing and we go over the space budget, we create extra storage space.
That’s when the vicious cycle begins.
Whether it’s taking over a hallway or guest room closet, we create more storage and the push and exceed those space budgets, too.
Space budgets aren’t limited to clothing. Kitchen appliances, toys, workout equipment, holiday decorations, you name it. There’s a certain amount of space for things. When we exceed the budget there are repercussions that come in many forms—financial, emotional, physical, etc.
So, how do you stick to a space budget?
Simple.
Back to our example. When there are 25 items of clothing hanging in your closet and you buy a brand new shirt you just could not resist you do this…
Remove and donate one item of clothing to stay on budget.
That may sound harsh to some. Yet if your space budget is 25, make a pact with yourself that you simply cannot have 26. Then, donate the older item to make space for the new shirt you want, keeping yourself within the space budget.
It really is that simple.
