That’s how one of my clients described me. I kind of like it. Though I don’t advocate a spoonful of sugar before working with me. Yet what we do together does have a medicinal effect. We treat the symptoms by decluttering and organizing. The true healing lies in a shift of your thinking and how you feel about your home or work space.
Part of that lies on us working together to figure out what works best for you. I don’t follow a 10-step process of organizing where you have to do these things in these rooms in this order. There are many ways to get your home to where you want it to be. Yet what I share has more to do with how you think about your space and the changes needed to avoid it falling back into disarray.
So while I may not always sugar-coat things, I do try to leave you with some tangible steps you can employ right away to continue what we started the day of my appointment. That comes in the form of some guidelines to follow:
- Know what matters to you – Much of the stuff we keep, in the grand scheme of things, doesn’t really mean that much to us. We keep things just because: (a.) somebody gave it to us, (b.) we spent good money on it, (c.) any other excuse. Keeping only what you love and parting with the rest is an important first step in decluttering.
- Declutter first, organize second – Removing stuff you don’t need first makes effective organizing possible.
- Start with the easy-to-declutter items first – Decluttering is a marathon, not a sprint. Start with a small task—a kitchen cabinet—and work your way up to more demanding tasks like attics and garages.
- Every item needs a home – If you can’t find a home for an item, then chances are you need to find it a new home besides your own.
- Declutter daily – Back to the baby steps philosophy. If you declutter for even five minutes a day you will make significant progress over a week or two.
- Remember it’s a journey – You will not declutter your entire house in a day. It’s a process that takes time. Ultimately, it will become a way of living and you will do it daily because of the feeling you get.
That’s all the medicine for now. If you need me to fly in with my black umbrella, please give a call at 508-246-6120 or drop a line.
