I’m not a big fan of storage units. For many people, storage units essentially act as an expensive place to store emotions.
Yes, that’s a rather bold statement. For many people currently living in a temporary residence and need a place to stash their stuff, storage units do serve a purpose. Yet far more people than you realize have storage units simply because they have too much stuff. And they have too much stuff because they simply can’t make the decision to part with an item for any number of reasons. So, they rent a storage unit to essentially get it out of their house until:
- They need an item
- A family member says they want an item
- Their home becomes too crowded once again.
Of those three bullet points, what do you think is most likely? Exactly. And then you have a jammed storage unit on your hands as well.
The picture below shows me after unpacking a moving truck of family heirlooms and other household stuff the client has had in storage in another state for two years.
When we were done sorting, some stuff went to charity, some stuff moved back where it came from (300 miles south), a few items will go into her new home, and the rest will be moved to a smaller, less expensive storage unit. Think about that…
These words are not meant to be cruel, but to prevent the clutter train from becoming a runaway. When you opt for a storage unit, you open the door to creating a literal mountain of clutter and paying for that privilege.
If you are at that point where you have too much stuff and you’re considering a storage unit, give me a call. If you have lost a parent or close loved one and the thought was to put things in storage for a while, the longer you delay making the tough decisions, the more difficult it will be.
